Gober

Gober

I really enjoy objects. I never thought about it, but in my own personal art collection, I have a lot of 3D work. If money wasn’t an issue and I could acquire whatever I wished, I would definitely purchase a work by Robert Gober. The first time I had seen his art was when I lived in San Francisco. His work is about sexuality, gender mixed in with religion and the human condition. His work also has an element of surrealism. I may not understand what each sculpture means, but I certainly do not mind spending the time investigating them.

Grey Today

Grey Today

What is going on Mother Nature?! Here in my little city, things were looking up for being outside. I noticed the new plants making their way up through the ground. We’ve had some beautiful days of 60+ degree weather. Spring is here. Wrong! Last night, we got a nice dusting of snow and it’s an insulting 30 degrees out. The sky is grey and moody. So, what is on my mind today? I’m thinking about the work of artist Berlinde De Bruyckere.

Now That’s A Donation

Now That’s A Donation

Recently, the cosmetics tycoon Leonard A. Lauder has donated his collection of cubist art to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the collection are works by Picasso, Braques, Leger and Gris. The estimated worth of the donation is 1.1 BILLION dollars! The museum board is freaking out! The museum staff is freaking out! I’m freaking out!

Was It Worth It?

Was It Worth It?

As much as I think the bulk of “reality” TV is a huge waste of time, I do have a few programs that I enjoy – Project Runway, Top Chef, America’s Next Top Model (only for the photo shoots) and House Hunters. Speaking on the former two, what I really like about them is the challenge to come up with some creative that speaks to who you are as a designer or chef. So, naturally when Bravo decided to air it’s visual art competition “Work Of Art”, I had to watch it. This was either going to be interesting or a huge train wreck.

Donut Anyone?

Donut Anyone?

So, I’ve been really good in the past with not eating donuts. Not so much lately. I have been enjoying the little cake donuts with colorful sprinkles provided in the library cafe on campus on an off for a couple of weeks now. I can’t help it! The donut beast inside has been awakened and it demands cake, rainbow sprinkled donuts until it is sated. This indulgence had me thinking about an artist whose work I saw a long time ago. Her name is Emily Eveleth. She creates large format paintings of jelly filled donuts. They’re epic, visceral and sexy. What’s not to love about a big, sexy donut?!
