I just got back from the opening of my exhibition in Kansas City. It was a bit touch and go because we have been having the funkiest weather in the region. First Fridays in KC is a great time with tons of people out going from gallery to gallery. Not so much this weekend. The weather was unseasonably cold and let’s face it, who wants to move around in a snow shower? A lot of things were canceled, so it made for a quieter First Friday. At my show, for the first half hour of the opening, there was no one. It did eventually pick up and the opening wasn’t a total bust. After that, I had a nice dinner at Pot Pie’s. My friend’s husband Victor took good care of me at the bar. The weekend was great spending time with DeAnna and her family. I managed to get to the Kemper and of course, I hit the Bob Jones shoe store. I got a cool pair of wedges by London Fly. Art and fashion are so closely linked much like art and science. These hoof shoes are probably one of my favorite art inspired shoes to date.

Remember way back in January, I had posted that I was going to start the final piece in my latch hook series called TNT? Well, here it is! I am definitely hanging up the hook for a while. I still have quite a bit of mesh and yarn left, so I’m sure I’ll be making another one – just not any time soon!

I got an interesting comment recently. Well, maybe it was not so interesting as it was a little insulting. When I moved back to Omaha, I met an older woman (I’ll call her Kay) at one of my jobs. She’s an art enthusiast and supporter and is very free with giving her opinions. I did a series of wood cut prints of dresses that she was really into. As time moved on, I moved on from that body of work. I like to try different things knowing fully that not everything is going to work. I have coveted “Herringbone Floor” by Rachel Whiteread since I first laid eyes on it. Oh, how I wish I’d scraped the money together when the edition first appeared at Serpentine Gallery. Perhaps one day, the art gods will take pity on me and this artwork will find it’s way into my collection. Once can dream!

I love keeping tabs on former classmates from graduate school. I enjoy seeing what they are working on since we parted ways from the University of Iowa. Hayley Barker is someone that I am so happy for. We were not in the same program, but met through mutual friends. She has been busting out some seriously gorgeous paintings. Her latest work for me is spiritual, psychedelic and about nature. The way she applies each individual dab of paint to the canvas is reminiscent of Seurat. Looking at her work is a great way to start the week!
